The recent study on collective agreements on allowances for working on public holidays and during overtime offers useful insights for employees and employers. Conducted by the Ministry of Social Affairs and Employment (SZW), the study was based on 149 collective agreements, which together represent a large proportion of Dutch workers.
Public holidays: What does the collective agreement say?
By 2024, almost all collective agreements surveyed apply a surcharge for working on public holidays. Employees who work on public holidays can expect a supplement ranging between less than 100%, exactly 100% or even more than 100% of their normal hourly wage. The choice of receiving the allowance in time or money is often possible, depending on the specific collective agreement.
Overtime: what are the arrangements?
Overtime is regulated in almost all collective agreements. In 130 collective agreements, employees receive an allowance for overtime, usually in time or money. In some sectors, the amount of the allowance depends on when the overtime takes place, such as in the evening or on weekends.
Diversity Days: More room for personal holidays
More and more collective agreements allow for diversity days, allowing employees to take time off on religious holidays or days that are important to them. This offers flexibility and takes into account personal beliefs and religious traditions.
